Haley Hasler’s self portraits depict ambivalence—about being a woman,
being a mother, being herself—surrounded by a level of all-too-familiar
domestic chaos.Haley expresses the various life-roles she plays and the
expectations that are invariably attached with outward presentations of
her inner self.
Children, husband, pets and chickens figure into the paintings with
Haley as the iconic focus. In her north Fort Collins studio, she creates
almost-theatrical sets populated with mannequins that are the basis of
her self portraits. The Colorado landscape that surrounds her home and
studio is also a prominent element.
Taking her cues from Cindy Sherman, the photographer known for her
conceptual portraits, as well as classical painters, Hayley’s work is a
contemporary take on a classic art form.
